Project Information

The Parks at Walter Reed project, located on the former Walter Reed Army Medical Center Campus, is an Enhanced Use Lease (EUL) development between the third party developer, the District of Columbia and Washington Gas. The developer leased approximately 66 acres of the site. Buildings on the site were re-purposed for retail, commerce, conference centers, science and technology headquarters, restaurants as well as construction of over 2,100 residential housing units.

EBL served as an engineering consultant for the central plant and thermal distribution system contractor. Our project scope required mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection engineering services. The central plant, located in the former central steam boiler plant building, served as the primary thermal energy source/sink for the buildings located within the development.

Our project design for the central energy plant included two 500-ton water cooled chillers with space allocated for a third expansion chiller, three high efficiency condensing hydronic boilers, pumps, controls and ancillary equipment. New electrical distribution equipment and circuiting to power equipment, lighting and convenience power. We also provided designs for the modification and expansion of the existing fire sprinkler and alarm system.
