When a local waste-to-energy plant was plannning to be decommissioned, Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG) explored alternate methods to generate steam. As part of a team, EBL provided engineering services to evaluate and propose a steam generating asset with a combined heat and power plant (CHP), modify the existing high pressure steam distribution system and reclaim water from a ground water decontamination facility for boiler feed water.
As a result of this project’s implementation, APG met its steam generation needs, reduced its electric purchases, and improved energy security. Construction costs for this project were $36.6 million. The guaranteed savings over 18 years was $107 million.
Additionally, APG had a positive impact on the environment by reducing annual CO2 emissions by over 22,500 tons.
