Project Information

EBL was assigned several projects requiring analyses, studies and upgrades to electrical power systems at the U.S. Naval Academy. Tasks included:

  • Repair of Electrical Power and Grounding Systems, Rickover Hall
  • Short Circuit/Coordination/Arc Flash Study, N. Severn Campus
  • Repair Power Quality, Alumni Hall

Repair of Electrical Power and Grounding Systems, Rickover Hall – We were tasked with performing a grounding study to determine the cause of power issues with Wind Tunnel Testing at the Fluids Aerodynamics Lab. Design-Build documents for repairs were provided.

Short Circuit/Coordination/Arc Flash Study, N. Severn Campus - The study covered the utility overcurrent protective device settings, normal system operation method, alternate operation, and operations which could result in maximum fault conditions. A report was generated that included Input Data, Low Voltage Fault Report, Momentary Duty Report, Interrupting Duty Report, Recommended Protective Device Settings and Incident Energy and Flash Protection Boundary Calculations. Coordination curves were generated for protected devices in series.

Repair Power Quality, Alumni Hall – This study included the electrical service and distribution and grounding electrode resistance; investigation of eddy currents, distortion and interference throughout the electrical power source as measured at the service entrance switchgear. We captured the data for voltage variations, frequency, total harmonic distortion, unbalance and flicker. A list of recommendations and cost estimates for each was prepared.
