Building 2188, Patuxent River NAS, MD

EBL investigated the fume hood systems, including duct layout, exhaust fans and makeup air, in Building 2188. This four-story building contains support offices, lab spaces and thirty chemical fume hoods. Roughly half of the fume hoods had failed tests administered by NAS Health and Safety and were not approved for use. We were tasked to identify and recommend corrections to these fume hood systems.

Our study concluded that the existing fume hoods were failing due to a combination of excessive exhaust system duct static and improper makeup air distribution. Additionally, several features of the existing lab exhaust system were no longer compliant with current laboratory ventilation standards. We made recommendations to address all conflicts with current design standards in addition to correcting the airflow problems at the hoods themselves.

Upon review of our recommendations, our task was modified to include design and post-construction award services. During construction, a task was added to replace all the air handling units.
