Renovation of the First and Second Floors, Hornbake Library, University of Maryland, College Park, MD
EBL designed the mechanical, electrical and fire protection engineering services (demolition and new work) related to the renovation of the first and second floors of the library to accommodate the transfer of the rare book collection from the McKeldin Library to the Hornbake Library. The project required an analysis of the available water supply, the existing HVAC system capacity and the power system's adequacy to support the renovation. The mechanical design consisted of the redistribution of air and some plumbing, the electrical design consisted of electrical power, lighting. telephone and data outlets, and the fire protection consisted of a performance based design of a new sprinkler system for the 1st and 2nd floors, new combination sprinkler/standpipe risers and a new addressable fire alarm system for the library and classroom side of the building. Aesthetics were a major concern of the library staff (louver sizes and locations, UV protection, ceiling heights, temperature and humidity levels in the book stack areas, etc.). This was the second phase of at least five phases of renovations projects scheduled for the library.
