Renovate Fire Protection and Detection Systems, Air Hangars 426 and 630, Naval Air Station, Sigonella, Sicily, Italy

This project was for the demolition and subsequent replacement of the entire AFFF systems and their appurtenance for Hangars 426 (15,845 SF/1,426 SM) and 630 (6,122 SF/551 SM). This included all pumps, panels, tanks, valves, pipes, etc. The new AFFF systems were designed for a 3% foam solution rate. Additional elements of the new AFFF system include: new bladder tanks (primary and reserve supply), new interior piping and valves, and new mechanical type AFFF oscillating monitor nozzles.

Demolition of the existing and design of new AFFF control releasing systems was also completed. These new systems include a new AFFF control releasing panel, manual, releasing station, UV/IR detection and all supporting wire and conduit.

This commission also incorporated the demolition of existing hangar bay deluge ceiling sprinkler systems back to the underground supply source, including the removal of all ceiling sprinkler heads, pipe and hangar supports. A new overhead hangar bay ceiling wet pipe sprinkler system was provided including all valves, pipe and supporting appurtenances. The ceiling sprinkler heads are 170 degrees Fahrenheit quick response closed heads.

Development of a phasing plan, to address how the demolition and new work for each hangar facility was to proceed was provided to accomplish necessary work without interrupting Air Wing operations. The design was completed in metric, designed in accordance with Italian standards and certified by a local design firm, The OK Design Group.
