Fire Protection and Egress Study, Statue of Liberty National Monument, New York, NY

EBL was retained to evaluate the state of overall fire protection at the Statue of Liberty. The scope of this task consisted of completing a detailed field survey of the Statue (including the pedestal) and comparing our findings to the general provisions found in the Life Safety Code® (NFPA 101®) published by the National Fire Protection Association. A specific study directive was to evaluate egress from the pedestal and the Statue with discussion as to whether access by the general public to the crown platform should be limited or terminated based on the report findings.

It is our professional opinion that, although significant, the fire protection concerns at the Statue of Liberty are not necessarily of such magnitude that access to the statue interior and crown viewing area should be deemed off limits to the general public as has been suggested. We have outlined methods to minimize the possibility of untenable conditions including improvements to fire protection water supply to the island, automatic sprinkler protection, other horizontal fire separations and continued professional and practiced crowd control management by Park Rangers and U.S. Park Police officers.
